Workplace Health & Safety

In Australia:

  • Workplace injuries occur every 2.4 seconds
  • Every year 1 worker in every 12 is injured seriously enough to lodge a workers compensation claim
  • There are over 7000 work-related deaths annually...compared to 1,596 road fatalities and 300 homicides (NOHSC, 2003).

Workplace accidents can destroy your business and failure to comply with OH&S rules can result in:

  • Substantial Government fines & penalties
  • Lawsuits & negligence claims
  • Increased workers compensation premiums.

OHS or Occupational Health and Safety in Australia began in 1956 when a magistrate ruled that the employer has a responsibility to provide a safe system of work. It applies across all industries, anywhere in Australia where people are employed to work.

It mandates that employers have a duty of care to provide a safe system of work and that employees have a duty of care to follow whatever directions they are given by the employer

Risk Management

Risk Management is one of the most crucial areas of occupational health and safety for employers. It involves the identification of workplace hazards, determining how much of a risk each hazard presents, and implementing ways to reduce the risk in the workplace.

Risk management methodologies can also be used to identify and reduce other risks in the workplace - such as risk of theft or with respect to company growth or restructuring.

Haycroft's in-house OH&S Division offers a complete risk management consulting service for clients. We work with your management team to identify risks and introduce risk management strategies to reduce those risks. We also implement continuous improvement plans and evaluation methods to ensure the risk management strategies are having their intended effect.

A risk management assessment may cover:

  • Your entire workplace
  • A single aspect of your operation, e.g. transportation, or warehousing
  • A single issue such as personal protective equipment
  • Technical aspects of what you do, e.g. plant equipment
  • The standards or acceptability of your OH&S documentation and management systems

Assessments may need to include:

  • Review of each specific area of your business to verify the adequacy of OH&S system requirements and checks against all legislative requirements applicable to that area.
  • Assessment across different areas of your business for a specific activity, for example, ordering, purchasing, using and training in personal protective equipment.
  • The need for a general probe, for example, after a serious accident
  • Assistance to ensure that you maintain a high standard of OH&S compliance

Haycroft can also train your staff to carry out on-going internal assessments. The benefits to your business of this internal work are:

  • Relatively low costs
  • Complete confidentiality
  • Reduced risk exposure
